Tempered glass is about 5 times stronger than annealed glass. But it is still not safe, because tempered glass even high quality tempered glass have possibility of spontaneous breakage without any reason or indicates.
This is because the Nickel Sulphide inclusion (NiS) in float glass materials. It is stable in annealed glass. However after the tempering process, the heated glass was cooled rapidly, while the NiS has no time to back to original temperate. It is after a certain time, the inclusions will return to low temperature, at the same time, NiS volume increased in the glass. Which caused breakage. This could be happen after one month or one year after produced. It is dangerous because you do not when it broken, and lossing the protection function to people.
Heat Soak Test (HST) is designed for reduce the spontaneous breakage rate. It is to put tempered glass in Heat Soaking chamber, heated again but at temperate of 290℃ for several hours. During the heat soaking test, the tempered glass contains NiS will be broken in the chamber. So the heat soaked glass will be safe to be installed in constructions. It let tempered glass self-exploding in advance before arrived at the installing field.
