VACUUM INSULATED GLASS (VIG)

Overview

Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIG) represents the next generation of energy-efficient glazing technology. By creating a high-vacuum layer (< 0.1Pa) between two sheets of glass, VIG eliminates conductive and convective heat transfer. Featuring an incredibly slim profile, VIG delivers the thermal insulation performance of a solid brick wall, making it the ultimate solution for modern sustainable architecture.

Key Features & Benefits

Extreme Thermal Insulation: Achieves an ultra-low U-value as low as 0.4~0.6 W/(m²·K), reducing energy consumption by up to 70% compared to single glazing.

Ultra-Thin & Lightweight: With a total thickness of only 6mm to 12mm, it eliminates the need for bulky profiles and reduces structural loads.

Superior Acoustic Performance: Effectively blocks low-to-mid frequency urban and traffic noise, delivering a sound reduction of over 36dB to 41dB.

Anti-Condensation: Remains perfectly clear and condensation-free even when outdoor temperatures drop to -30℃.

Extended Lifespan: Built with robust edge-sealing technology to ensure the vacuum layer remains intact for over 25 years.

Applications

Green Buildings & Passive Houses: Windows, doors, and curtain walls for ultra-low energy buildings.

Building Retrofits: Ideal for historical or existing window upgrades without replacing the original slim frames.

Commercial Refrigeration: Glass doors for display freezers, ensuring maximum clarity and energy savings.

Transportation: Window glazing for high-speed trains, luxury yachts, and electric vehicles.

The key differences of vacuum glass vs. standard insulated glass

Thermal Efficiency (U-Value): Standard IGUs typically achieve a U-value of around 1.1 to 2.8 W/m²K. Vacuum glass can reach an extraordinary U-value as low as 0.4 to 0.6 W/m²K—performing on par with a solid brick wall.

Thickness & Weight: To get high insulation, standard IGUs require triple glazing, making them thick (up to 40mm+) and heavy. VIG achieves superior insulation with a ultra-thin profile (often just 6mm to 12mm total thickness), drastically reducing structural load.

Acoustic Performance: The vacuum layer acts as a massive barrier against low-frequency traffic noise, offering far superior soundproofing compared to standard gas-filled units.

Lifespan & Condensation: Standard IGUs face gas leakage over time, leading to internal condensation and failure. True vacuum glass is hermetically sealed with materials like glass solder, virtually eliminating internal condensation and ensuring a lifespan of 25+ years.

Why the Industry is Shifting to VIG

For architects, developers, and facade engineers, VIG solves a massive dilemma. It allows old buildings to be retrofitted with high-performance glass without replacing the original, narrow window frames. For new construction, it maximizes usable indoor space by slimming down the building envelope while easily meeting strict net-zero carbon regulations.

The future of facades is thinner, lighter, and vastly more energy-efficient.
