Heat soaked glass also called HST tempered glass, heat-reinforced glass, is created for reducing the risk of spontaneous breakage in toughened glass.
All float glass contains a imperfection of nickel sulfide (NiS) inclusion. Most of NiS inclusions are stable and cause no problems. However it has possibility that NiS inclusions could cause spontaneous breakage in fully tempered glass.
In tempered glass, the heated glass is cooled rapidly, to achieve the required internal tensile and surface compression stresses. But the NiS inslusion have no time to back to the original status in this process, as time being, the NiS inclusion return to low temperature and increased its volume in glass, which eventually caused the breakage of glass. The spontaneous is about 3‰, good quality tempered glass can be 1‰. But it is unavoidable.
Heat soaking is re-heat the tempered glass in heat soaking chamber, for several hours at high temperature of 290℃. This is to accelerate NiS expansion. This is intended to make the glass panels contains NiS to break in the heat soak chamber, thus reducing the risk of potential breakage after installation.
